Ingredients and Substitutions
To make this healthy Shamrock Shake, you'll need:
- Mint chocolate chip ice cream (keto, or high-protein preferably. Or replace it with vanilla frozen yogurt)
- Whey protein powder: It will make your drink thick and protein-rich (I used sugar-free whey isolate protein powder, vanilla flavored, but you can use any type that is flavored with vanilla, coconut, or mint)
- Unsweetened coconut milk: However, you can use any plant-based milk of your liking.
- Sweetener: It depends on which sugar substitute you enjoy. I used stevia in the raw and a hint of honey. If your ice cream is loaded with sugar, you may not need any extra sweetener.
- Fresh mint leaves, optional (It will add some freshness but neither a vibrant green color nor a rich minty flavor. However, it isn't a processed ingredient such as the extract)
- Mint extract: Although I added fresh mint leaves, they won't flavor the shamrock shake as much as mint extract. But go easy here! One or two drops are more than enough!
- Avocado: You won't taste it at all! It is only for adding extra creaminess to our protein shake. If you prefer, replace it with a banana. The fruit must be preferably frozen. But you can use fresh fruit and add some ice cubes. For a shake with a vibrant green color, add about ⅓ cup of fresh baby spinach (you won't taste them, I promise!), or green food coloring.
- Dark chocolate chips, optional (Use mini chocolate chips or cacao nibs, or chop the regular-size ones to add a crunch to your shake. You may add them to the blender or mix them after blending the shamrock protein shake. I prefer not blending them with the other ingredients because they can make your shake pale green, with a greyish tone.
Tips for Making the Best Shamrock Shake Recipe
- Make sure to blend all the ingredients well. Start by adding the milk and then the solid ingredients so it won't make your blender work harder than it should.
- If a vibrant green color is one of the musts for your shake, add spinach or food coloring to our recipe, and don't blend the chocolate chips in it.
- If you don't have frozen avocado or banana, don't worry! Use one of the fresh fruits for creaminess and add some ice cubes to chill your protein shake.
- If using a regular ice cream, don't add an extra sweetener.
Variations
- Vegan: Use vegan ice cream, chocolate chips, and plant-based protein such as soy or pea protein powder to make your vegan St. Patrick's Day Shamrock Shake.
- Keto: Use keto ice cream, sugar-free protein powder, and keto sweetener. If adding fruit, use avocado, not banana.
- Clean eating: Skip the food coloring and also the ice cream. Instead use more fruit, add spinach or blanched kale, peppermint oil instead of extract, and a plant-based protein powder.
